Teaching Image Processing and Optical Engineering to University Biology Students

ABSTRACT Biophysics is an interdisciplinary pursuit requiring researchers with knowledge and skills in several areas. Optical instruments computers are fundamental tools biophysics research to collect analyze data. We developed a 1-semester Engineering Laboratory course teach image processing, optical engineering, undergraduate students majoring biology biochemistry. With the use of development systems on students' laptops cloud, learned processing Python OpenCV. Each student constructed microprocessor-based lensless holographic microscope, gaining hands-on experience engineering. The class culminated original, student-designed projects. All lectures, labs, projects were performed both person remotely, response COVID-19 pandemic.
